+The Institute of Vietnamese Studies in California is proud to announce the release of three new tools for Nom Characters on Computers and the Internet.

+ANNOUNCEMENT
+
+The compilers of the ?Dictionary of Excerpts from Writings in Nom Characters? are pleased to announce the availability of the three tools necessary for utilizing Nom characters on the computer:
+
+ 1. The true type fonts HAN NOM A and HAN NOM B have been developed by Chan Nguyen Do Quoc Bao (Germany), To Minh Tam (USA) and Ni sinh Thien Vien Vien Chieu (Vietnam). Their work got started in 2001, completed in 2003, and publicized in 2005. These two true type fonts can be used with WIN-2000 or WIN-XP and Office XP or Office 2003 to display Han and Nom characters with code points by the Unicode Standard. Two sets of true type fonts are available with high and low resolutions. The lead font designer has quoted them as the Soul of Nom Characters on Computers and the Internet.

+ A utility program, the Babel Map contains extensive data manipulation abilities making it a convenient tool for viewing and copying glyphs from a selected true type font. It can be downloaded from:

+ After downloading and unzipping, the two True Type Fonts HAN NOM A and HAN NOM B are ready for a successful implementation.

+ * CJK Unified Ideographs Extension A [u+3400 ? u+4DB5 (6572 glyphs)]
+ * CJK Unified Ideographs [u+4E00 ? u+9FA5 (20,832 glyphs)]
+ * Private Use Area [u+E000 ... (glyphs temporarily used by the Dictionary compilers team)]
+ HAN NOM B covers :
+ * CJK Unified Ideographs Extension B [u+20000 ? u+2A6D6 (42,702 glyphs)]
+ * Fillers used by font designers on purpose [u+2A6D0 ...]
+ 2. Keyboards for Han (Chinese) and Nom (Demotic) Characters [HanNomIME]
+ You can merge 23,000 Han-Viet characters & sounds with 20,000 Nom characters & sounds straight into Microsoft Word. Characters are best displayed with the fonts HAN NOM A and HAN NOM B. The keyboards HanNomIME have been developed by Tran Uyen Thi (USA) and Alexandre Le (France).

+ This is the first-ever online Nom dictionary. It has collected over 5,500 sounds for reading Nom, important features for each Nom character, and over 25,000 excerpts from writings with clear, complete, and accurate information on their sources. Compilers residing in different countries started this work in 2003.
